{"id":8900,"date":"2012-06-14T09:34:56","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T13:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/collideascape\/?p=8900"},"modified":"2012-06-14T09:34:56","modified_gmt":"2012-06-14T13:34:56","slug":"chasing-shadows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.keithkloor.com\/?p=8900","title":{"rendered":"Chasing Shadows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/2012\/06\/07\/the-bias-in-environmental-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> that the findings of this Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/scientific_integrity\/abuses_of_science\/a-climate-of-corporate-control.html\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> were parroted by all mainstream media journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Except <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/archives\/2012\/06\/05\/follow-the-pennies\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a>, who actually vetted the report.\u00a0Well, turns out that Ron Bailey at Reason magazine is the reason why UCS has now issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/clarifying-how-general-electric-influences-climate-science-and-policy\" target=\"_blank\">clarification<\/a>\u00a0about one of its claims.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian (which I pointed to as one of those publications that didn&#8217;t scrutinize the report) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/2012\/jun\/14\/general-electric-donations-climate-science\" target=\"_blank\">covers<\/a> the UCS screwup:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Union of Concerned Scientists has revised a report accusing major US companies of distorting the public conversation about\u00a0<a title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Climate change\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/climate-change\">climate change<\/a>, saying it made a mistake counting donations from\u00a0<a title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on General Electric\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/generalelectric\">General Electric<\/a>\u00a0to thinktanks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When the original report was released, numerous journalists and bloggers gobbled it up uncritically. I suspect that is because it neatly accorded with a meme that even Chris Mooney now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/mann-handled-decade-ago-conservatives-attacked-scientist-and-created-leader\" target=\"_blank\">admits<\/a> is outdated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Despite my praise for [Michael] Mann and his book&#8221;\u201dand I even gave it a cover blurb&#8221;\u201dI do have some differences with him. For instance, I think that here and in his public comments, Mann tends to focus too heavily on the idea that resistance to climate science, and his research, is corporate driven. Or as he puts it in the book: &#8220;well organized, well-funded, and orchestrated.&#8221;\u009d In contrast, I have increasingly come to think it is primarily ideological&#8221;\u201ddriven by libertarian individualism, and those who embrace this view and its associated emotions&#8221;\u201dand the corporate connection is secondary (though often real). I thus think that focusing on it too much misleads us as to the nature of the opposition, which has grown so ideological at this point&#8221;\u201dand so driven by gut emotion&#8221;\u201dthat it does the traditionally pragmatic business community no favors.
