Actually, Dr. Offit screwed up a bit at the end. Smallpox has been eradicated worldwide and doesn’t exist in animal reservoirs so no one (except a few scientists who work with the virus in strictly controlled laboratories or military personnel who could be vulnerable to bio-warfare) needs to be vaccinated for it and thus no scar. We were almost to that point with polio, but a few foci of infection still exist. The Gates Foundation just announced multimillion dollar funding to attempt again to finally eradicate it.
