Say Man

Anybody who remembers their wise-ass high school days will recall playing the dozens–a verbal contest of put-downs between two people (usually guys) that degenerates into an x-rated volley of insults about family members. It’s not for the meek.

I’ve noticed that the raunchy tradition is alive and well on some climate blogs and presumably carried on by adults. When done well, the dozens is equally hilarious and vulgar. So without further ado, I direct you to the combative and highly entertaining thread spawned by Coby’s did climate change bring down Mubarek post. Read it to the accompaniment of this Bo Diddly song, which is a PG-rated example of the dozens.

    Keith,
Yo’ mama’s so fat, when she hauls ass she gotta take two trips! I’ll relate this to climate and egypt, just give me a minute… actually, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend, I’m sure you’re mother’s lovely. (This was an example of white person dozens, less wit, more apologizing)

I think a string of yo mama jokes would have been an improvement on cody’s comment thread, at least it might have been funny.

    #52-“my apologies, douchebag.”

there’s even an apology before someone is called a douchebag!

My favorite was F-you, F-wit, or something along those lines. But yeah, mothers and daughters were not excluded, either.

Actually, I thought the thread was pretty good when it wasn’t just an insultathon. The problem is there was no reasonable give and take; everybody just dug in their heels.

That’s not true, when Mandas explained what he was trying to say, while still calling me an illiterate and a moron, I apologized for getting him wrong, and then explained that if he wasn’t so quick in insulting people, maybe they would read what he as to say more closely.

I did point out that his statement about prima facie really doesn’t mean what he thinks it means, and to that he acknowledged he wasn’t a lawyer.  So my suggestion for Mandas stands, if he’s not a lawyer, if he’s talking to lay people, he may wish to avoid the latin phrases no one knowss, especially ones he doesn’t know.

So I think I was very flexible.

Regarding his wife and mother, one good non sequitur deserves another — if he thinks its okay to continually insist anyone who disagrees with him is a moron, illiterate, and a denier (even when he is using phrases he doesn’t understand) than game theory tit for tat suggests with repeated iteration, that is, insists, I slug him back, at least once.

    Touche!

I missed that, just skimmed it. With an issue like that, there is such a multitude of causes, there’s probably reasonable arguments to be made both ways. Personally, I would rather celebrate the clear victory for humanity. I have a friend from college in tahrir square and her husband was shot in the chest and leg by the police a week ago or so, I don’t think she’d want to hear that this was just a reaction to high food prices.

oh yeah, looove Bo Diddley! hadn’t heard him in a while, thanks for the link.

I admit I don’t understand what Romm or Coby or anyone is trying to say about this.

    A. Crop failures might lead to political unrest? Is that insightful?

    B. Non-Anthropogenic climate change causes crop failures might lead to political unrest? Is that insightful? And if so, what would you do about that?

    C. Anthropogenic climate change causes crop failures leads to political unrest — that might be insightful, but they get offended if someone asks them to prove that? And if so, what would you do about that?

Are the policies from B similar, different, completely different than the policies from C?

And their overt claim is B, but I think they’re obviously trying to claim C while only making arguments about B.
